In 1964, Yamada Sensei moved to New York City with the intention of taking over as head instructor of the New York Aikikai dojo. At the age of 17, he began his training in aikido under the tutelage of O Sensei at the honbu dojo, which is the headquarters of the Aikikai.
Not only did he establish the New York Aikikai as a preeminent institution for the study of aikido, but he was also instrumental in developing a thriving community for the practice of this martial art across the United States and, ultimately, around the globe. His lessons soared with the melody and strength of a symphony, inspiring all individuals to give their very best performance.
He was a huge advocate of individualism and practicing with one’s whole heart. As was Yamada Sensei’s wish, the New York Aikikai will not close its doors. He cherished nothing more than large classes filled with enthusiastic students, so in his memory, I ask that you practice as though he were teaching the session. His incredible vitality and kindheartedness of spirit will be present on the mat for all of us to experience. Yoshimitsu Yamada The 17th of February, 1938 to the 15th of January, 2023
