She graduated from Pattison High School in 1948 (9) and received her diploma. She worked as a hairdresser at Minnie Tipton’s Beauty Shop in Brookshire after graduating from beauty school. Carl Glen Miller, the love of her high school years, and she were married on December 20, 1952, in Sealy, Texas. She lived on the farm that she and Carl developed together for the entirety of her life. She prepared meals for the farm workers and delivered supplies to the farm during critical harvesting periods.
Early on, she enjoyed teaching herself how to paint on canvas. Carl built her a separate structure for her beauty business when the kids arrived, which she ran for many years with unwavering support from the community. She could work at the store while the kids were in school. Joy also enjoyed gardening. Her garden produced the best tomatoes and vegetables in the area, which she kindly gave to the freezer, her family, and the community. Leukemia claimed the life of their son Donnie in 1968. They would have their second child, Ginny Lynn, shortly after, in 1970.
Joy attended Sealy All Around Cowboy Church as long as she could. She cherished the sermons that were based on Scripture and the singing. When she wasn’t in church, she watched the clergy lead worship on television. Day or night, she could always be seen reading the Bible. The visitation will be held on January 12, 2023, from 12:00 to 2:00 in the chapel of the Canon Funeral Home. The funeral rites will be overseen by Pastor Sonny Rice, while Janet Williams will play the piano. The burial will afterward take place at Pattison Cemetery.
