Fred Smith Obituary, Death – Oregon – Fred Smith died on January 19, 2023, in his 100th year, in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by his cherished family. When he died, he was on his way to his heavenly home. Helen, his beloved wife, passed away before him (July 2020). His amazing children, Debbie and Brian Whatmough, Colleen, Susan and Brian Aubert, and Lee, will have fond memories of him and will miss him deeply. He was a treasured grandfather to Nicole and Darryl Dorsman and their children Joshua and Jayne, Matthew Whatmough and Emilia Mercante, Steven Aubert, Brittany and Tim Ellis and their children Zoey and Amelia, and Breanne Smith and Derek Bailey.
Miranda and Henry Heersink, his sister-in-law Min Frost, and sister-in-law/brother-in-law Beverly and Ron Ferguson, as well as many great nieces, nephews, and friends, will all miss him terribly. Sterling, Oscar, and Wray Bond died before Fred, as did his sister Laura Bond. Fred was born, raised, and spent his entire life in Troy. He had a dairy farm and did custom agricultural work around the region, so he was familiar with many of the residents and many of the back roads.
Fred is now 99 years old. When most men retired, Fred continued to do chores with the horses, cut everyone’s grass with their riding lawn mowers, kept chickens so he could sell and deliver eggs across the region, and called in at various homes for coffee. All of these activities occurred after the vast majority of men had retired. Fred was the type of person who always made guests feel comfortable in his home, and even after Helen died, he made sure there was something to eat with coffee, such as pie or cookies.
