Douglas Berchild Obituary, Death – At the age of 79, Douglas Andrew Berchild, who resided in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, passed away at the Cambridge Memory Care facility in Rice Lake on Thursday, January 19, 2023. When he passed away, he was a resident at Cambridge Memory Care in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Doug was provided with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by his doctor in the month of October 2012. Doug Berchild was born on March 27th, 1943 in Superior, Wisconsin. He was the son of John Berchild and Mary (Lent), and his birth date was March 27th. After finishing his high school education in Superior, Doug enlisted in the United States Navy and worked as a radar operator for a total of four years throughout his time in the military. After serving his country honorably in the armed forces, he continued his study at the University of Wisconsin–Superior, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in history.
After this, he was discharged from the armed forces. After working as a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin–Stout for seven years, Doug was honored with the title of Teacher of the Year at the institution. Before calling it quits and retiring, he put a good number of years in with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in Superior. Doug was an avid golfer and skier. When he was a boy, he lived in Superior, and he shared a lot of anecdotes with his friends about his childhood there. Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Kay Berchild; two sons, James Berchild (Megan) and Steven Berchild (Jessi); four grandchildren, Ryan, Kate, Hannah, and Michael; four brothers, John (Kathy) Berchild, Rick (Bonnie) Berchild, Dan (Mary Beth) Berchild, and Nick Berchild; three sisters, Susan Larson, Peggy Bunkholt, and Julie (Mike) Kaluza; and numerous nephews and His parents, John and Mary, and his sister, Mary Lynn Berchild, all went away before he did. He was the last surviving member of his family. He was the only member of his family to have lived to adulthood.
Father Edwin Anderson will preside over the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial that will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rice Lake on the morning of Friday, January 27, 2023, at eleven o’clock in the morning. The Rice Lake Veterans Center Honor Guard is going to be the one to carry out the military rites for the departed veteran. A burial service is scheduled to take place at a later date. Visitation is scheduled to take place at Appleyard’s Home for Funerals on Thursday from 4 PM to 7 PM. Visitation is scheduled to take place at the Church on Friday morning from 10 to 11 am.
