Darnell Calhoun Obituary, Death – Darnell Calhoun, a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed near Lake Elsinore on Friday afternoon, January 13, 2023. Around 4:30 p.m., Deputy Darnell Calhoun was shot in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane, a single-family house subdivision in the unincorporated town of Lakeland Village near the city’s eponymous lake. Calhoun was brought to Wildomar’s Inland Valley Medical Center, where he died.
The perpetrator was captured, according to officials. The suspect is still alive, according to Sheriff Chad Bianco, according to the Southern California News Group. Following the event, deputies and law enforcement personnel raced to the scene. There was no information on how Calhoun was shot or what he was investigating at the time. The suspect was treated on the spot by Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. Hundreds of cars were being rerouted from the Grand Avenue and Gregory Place area as night fell.
The event occurred one week after a memorial service for Deputy Isaiah Cordero, who was murdered on December 29 during a traffic check in Jurupa Valley. Cordero was the department’s first officer to be killed since 2003. Since then, several deputies, including two from COVID-19, have perished in the line of duty. William Shae McKay, the suspect in Cordero’s death, was killed in a confrontation with police in Norco. McKay was released on bond while awaiting his trial on a wrongful imprisonment allegation. After failing to appear at a sentencing hearing, a warrant was issued for the three-strike criminal’s arrest.
According to a March 2022 article on personnel departing the San Diego Police Department by KPBS, San Diego’s public broadcasting station, Calhoun was a transfer. Calhoun informed the broadcaster that his position had grown after police officers quit because the department required them to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Calhoun stated that he was given the rounds but left for the Sheriff’s Department owing to an increase in workload and a desire to be closer to his family. He was posted to the station in Lake Elsinore.
